The Alienware M15 R6 is a badass gaming and productivity laptop with more than enough raw power to handle recent games at maximum settings. However, there is one critical point to remember that we will discuss shortly.
This laptop’s high-end specifications are being reviewed. It features an Intel Core i7-11800H processor, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of SSD storage. It has twice the RAM and storage of most midrange gaming laptops accessible online, but in most circumstances, the performance will be comparable.
However, the Nvidia RTX 3080 (8GB DDR6) is the primary attraction here. It’s so powerful that, even in its mobile edition, many modern games will run smoothly even at maximum settings, thanks in part to the QHD display resolution.
The Witcher 3 maxes out at 101 frames per second. You can play Control with ray-tracing enabled and all of the eye candy enabled, and you won’t even need to employ the performance-enhancing DLSS to achieve the best frame rates.
However, the RTX 3080 in the Alienware M15 R6 appears to be hard-capped at 125W power usage, including 10 watts of dynamic boost. That is exactly the problem we were discussing.
Given that certain RTX 080 laptops can be configured with up to 165 watts, this appears to be pretty low, particularly for an Alienware laptop. Even the R6 with RTX 3070 options outperforms with 130 watts.
However, the difference in the actual frame rate may not be significant in many games. Still, for a gaming laptop this powerful, the lower TGP is a true ego bruiser; however, keep in mind that some rival gaming laptops of similar size and weight may have a performance advantage.
The Lenovo Legion 7 and Asus ROG Strix Scar, for example, outperform in select titles, while the 17-inch Alienware M17 R4 also employs the most powerful laptop version of the GPU available.
Aside from that, the M15 R6’s cooling mechanism is outstanding, drawing cold air in from the top via the top-left section of the keyboard and blowing heated air out of the back grille. As you play, heat spreads quickly across the keyboard, making the entire laptop seem heated.
